Titan Carter Defends Title at 2025 Oceana Golf Club Championship 🏆
Defending champion Titan Carter captured the 2025 Oceana Golf Club Championship, defeating Jonathan Buck 5&3 in a decisive final match. A birdie on the second hole gave Carter early momentum, and from there he never trailed. When asked to describe his round, the Shelby High School junior and two-time WMC League medalist summed it up in one word: “Solid.”
After weeks of dry conditions, the golf course finally received a much-needed soaking rain the night before the championship. The turf played soft and receptive, with minimal disturbance to the matches. A steady breeze from the south pushed the clouds away, ushering in warmer, drier conditions as the day went on.
In the final, Carter wasted no time attacking the pins. A birdie on the second hole set the tone, and from there he maintained control. Explaining his calm, consistent strategy, he said: “Fairways and greens are my game. I won’t worry about going low, but I’ll avoid going high. I like to go low, just avoiding mistakes is key.” His only misstep came on the 11th hole with a double bogey, but by then he held a comfortable four-hole cushion
Carter’s summer has been packed with competitive golf, including his run on the Meijer/Callaway Junior Tour (https://www.juniorgolf.org/junior/programs/glfpb/index.html ) where he currently leads the player of the year standings with 885 points after 10 events, 17.5 points ahead of second place. He’s collected two tour victories this season, at The Ravines and Forest Akers West, and with at least two events left, the soon-to-be 17-year-old (December 18) is adding to an already impressive junior golf résumé.
In other matches:
- Handicap Division: Ben Coon defeated Vic Garcia 2 Up. On the 18th hole, with Garcia in position 100 yards from the green, Coon attacked with an aggressive tee shot that finished pin-high just off the green. He rolled in a birdie to close the match. “I have to give him 100% credit for that attacking mentality,” Garcia said. “He went and got it!”
- Senior Division: Gary Blohm topped Rick Kempker 4&3.
- Super Senior Division: Bob Beckman bested Tom Kirk 4&2. Kirk, tied for the most Club Championships in club history with six, remains a respected competitor.
- Ladies Division: Liz Ortiz claimed the title over Orianna Bylsma.

RULES
Every year we welcome all of our Certificate Holders, Playing Members, and Employees to challenge their golf skills through friendly competition in our Club Championship Tournament! Members can enter two divisions only if one is the open championship.
Sign-up closes June 18 and pairings will be posted by 6:00 PM on June 19; once the pairings are posted no more entries will be allowed in. Members can enter two divisions only if one is the open championship. The first round of play begins on Friday, June 20, with the finals to be played on Sunday, August 10.
In Match Play, the game is played by holes. A hole is won by the player which holes their ball in the fewest amount of strokes (net strokes where applicable). The reckoning of holes is kept by the terms: so many holes up or all square, and so many to play. ***Pick-up official scorecards in the pro shop prior to your match, and turn back in completed scorecards after each match. RECORD EACH PLAYERS' SCORE FOR EACH HOLE PLAYED WITH A NUMBER; IF INTERESTED IN MARKING THE RECKONING OF HOLES, YOU MUST USE A SEPARATE LINE.*** A player may concede a hole or a match at any time prior to the conclusion of the hole or the match. Concession of a stroke, hole, or match may not be declined or withdrawn. This is a bracket-style, single elimination tournament.
Time frames and match pairings for each round will be posted in the clubhouse, website, and emailed. In each round, players must arrange to play their matches on or before the date stated. Any matches not completed in the time frame posted will result in a double forfeit. The finals will be held Sunday, August 10, 2025 starting at 9:00 AM.
- The Championship Division will play from the Black Tee Markers with no handicap involved.
- The Handicap Division will play from the Blue Tee Markers with handicaps playing off the lower of the two handicaps — using 75% of established handicaps.
- The Senior Division (60-70 years) will play from the White Tee Markers — using 75% of established handicaps.
- The Super Senior Division (71+ years) will play from the Gold Tee Markers — using 75% of established handicaps.

- The Handicap, Senior, Super Senior, and Ladies Divisions handicaps will be noted on the match scorecards.
The Divisions playing with handicaps require an ESTABLISHED handicap; we recommend at least three 18-hole rounds of this current year — the more scores you post, the more representative your index. To maintain a current index, you should continue to post ALL adjusted gross scores for rounds played under authorized formats and by the Rules of Golf. IF YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY ON THE ACTIVE GAM GHIN HANDICAP LIST, ONE WILL BE ESTABLISHED FOR YOU FOR $41 (using your club credit if applicable, or charged to your club account). By signing-up in to play these Divisions, you are accepting these terms. An email will be sent from GHIN letting players know the login info for their account profile; this will allow you to post scores from any course from your phone or computer, and keep up with your handicap all season long!
